Welcome to Episode 202 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast!
This week we are unpacking some of the most common early training mistakes and how their programming has evolved over the past decade.
The conversation kicks off with DY's experience training at a new gym on the Sunshine Coast, featuring full Citadel, Strive and Cybex setups, and what it's like to finally get hands on some of the best equipment in the world.
From there, we dive into the meat of the episode, reflecting on the days of running 30+ sets per muscle group and why that style of training eventually had to change. We discuss the interplay between volume and intensity, why not all sets carry equal fatigue, and how strategic exercise selection can allow for more productive volume without blowing out recovery.
The discussion also explores a nuanced take on stimulus to fatigue ratio, why it's a useful concept but shouldn't become a reason to avoid training hard as well as how soreness, recovery and performance actually relate once you're years deep into training.

Welcome to episode 201 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! In this episode, we kick things off with a recap of the second BDU Lift & Greet before diving into some talking points.
We explore where the line sits between self-improvement and self-obsession in bodybuilding, what green flags coaches look for before taking someone into a contest prep, and whether flexible dieting has ultimately helped or hurt athletes.
We also get into when to adjust your program during prep, the biggest lies athletes tell themselves throughout the process, the long-term costs of repeated preps, and whether elite bodybuilding and long-term health can genuinely coexist.
To wrap things up, we tackle the question of when a coach stops serving the athlete and starts serving the outcome.

Welcome to Episode 200 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast!
To celebrate the milestone, we bring on a very special guest, Chris Black. Coach, exercise scientist, reigning under-90s Queensland IFBB and NABBA Queensland champion, and brand new father.
In this episode, Chris breaks down his case for bro splits, using frequency as a tool based on individual physique needs. We get into his relaxed post-show approach, why he monitors biometrics over the scale, and why he doesn't recommend it for everyone.
We also cover how his prep approach has evolved since 2013, his take on competing naturally before making the jump to the enhanced side of the sport, and if peptides actually have application in prep.
Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 199 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast!
This week we are joined by Dr. Martin Refalo, researcher, coach, and new WNBF Australia President for a wide-ranging conversation bridging the gap between science and the stage.
Martin shares his own journey from old-school prep in 2016 to evidence-based bodybuilding, and why those two contrasting experiences shaped everything that followed. The conversation covers how to actually interpret and apply research, why looking at one training variable in isolation isn't practical and what his own protein meta-analysis really showed.
The boys also dig into how coaches and athletes can identify trustworthy science communicators and why speaking in absolutes is a red flag worth paying attention to.

Welcome to episode 198 of the Bodybuilding Downunder Podcast!
In this episode, we break down how we actually structure a successful contest prep from both a coaching and competitor perspective.
The conversation dives into pre-prep phases, appropriate rates of loss, and the pros and cons of longer versus shorter prep timelines. We also explore when prep truly starts to feel like prep, how athletes typically respond to the dieting condition, and the role of mindset in navigating fatigue and hunger as the weeks progress.
Finally, we share our personal experiences with diet foods during prep, why they can sometimes create more problems than they solve, and how simplifying nutrition can often make the entire process smoother.
If you’re planning a contest prep or are currently in the middle of one, this episode provides practical insights to help you approach the process more effectively.

Welcome to Episode 197 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast!
In this episode, we take a different direction and explore the psychology behind bodybuilding ambition, unpacking the concept of mimetic desire and how our goals may be shaped more by influence and status than we realise.
We discuss whether physique goals are truly internal or socially driven, how social media amplifies comparison, and why division standards continue to evolve year after year. The conversation explores the influence of iconic athletes on category growth, the shifting criteria across federations, and how rivalry and prestige can subtly shape the direction of the sport.
We also unpack the role coaches, podcasts, and industry leaders play in influencing athlete aspirations, and examine the fine line between healthy inspiration and destructive comparison. The episode finishes with a discussion around autonomy in a sport built on judging, rankings, and public evaluation.
Whether you’re a competitive bodybuilder, a coach, or someone simply invested in improving your physique, this episode offers perspective on identity, ambition, and what really drives progress in modern bodybuilding.

Welcome back to episode 193 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast.
With 200 episodes fast approaching, the boys take a step back and reflect on where it all began; the very first gym sessions, early training influences, questionable choices, and the moments that shifted bodybuilding from a casual hobby into a long-term pursuit.
We unpack our individual journeys into the sport, from backyard workouts and school gyms to first contest preps, early coaching experiences, and the hard lessons that only time (and mistakes) can teach. The discussion also explores how our beliefs around training volume, food choices, bulking, and recovery have evolved over the years.
To wrap up, we reflect on what keeps us involved in bodybuilding today, the responsibility that comes with coaching, and what we hope listeners take away from hearing the unfiltered realities of our beginnings.
